Christmas Stocking Mahjong

Christmas Stocking Mahjong lays the 144 tiles out as a stocking hung up for Christmas: a thick cuff across the top, a straight leg, and a foot that turns out to the right. It is part of our Christmas Mahjong collection.

It is an easy layout. The leg is only five tiles wide, so its rows are short, and most of the work is in the cuff and the heel.

How to play

The rules are the same on every layout. Click two free tiles with the same face to remove them. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. Clear all 72 pairs to win. The how to play guide has pictures.

How the Christmas Stocking layout is built

The cuff is two rows of seven tiles, the top row two high and the second three high. The leg below is five tiles wide with a three-high stripe down the middle. At the bottom the stocking widens to eight tiles as the foot turns right, and it ends in a single row of five tiles two high for the toe.

Tips for Christmas Stocking Mahjong

  • The cuff is the most stacked part of the board. Take its top tiles early so the leg below opens up.
  • Watch the heel, where the foot turns. The rows there are the longest on the board, and their middle tiles stay blocked until you clear in from the ends.
  • The toe row at the bottom has free tiles at both ends from the start. Use them when you need a partner.

The Christmas Stocking layout stacks its 144 tiles in three layers: 62 on the table, 62 on layer 2, 20 on top.

How we rate difficulty. We had the computer play 200 games on each layout, picking moves the same way our Hint button does. On Christmas Stocking it cleared the board without a shuffle in about 70% of games. That is easier than the classic Turtle, which comes in at about 50%. People who plan ahead do better than that, but the order of the layouts stays much the same. The full list is on the all layouts page.
