Christmas Wreath Mahjong

Christmas Wreath Mahjong arranges the 144 tiles in a round wreath with an empty middle and a bow tied at the bottom. It is part of our Christmas Mahjong collection.

Like any ring, it is friendly to play. The wreath is never more than three tiles thick, so no row is long and tiles come free all the way round.

How to play

The rules are the same on every layout. Click two free tiles with the same face to remove them. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. Clear all 72 pairs to win. The how to play guide has pictures.

How the Christmas Wreath layout is built

The ring is two to three tiles thick and stacked up to three high, with the highest tiles at the top and bottom. Inside the bottom of the ring sits the bow: two tiles stacked four high, the tallest point on the board.

Tips for Christmas Wreath Mahjong

Take the bow early. Its four-high stacks hold eight tiles, and the lower ones are hard to reach until the top ones are gone.
Work round the ring evenly. If you clear one side completely, the matches you need may all be on the other side.
The tiles on the inside edge of the ring are open on one side, so many of them are free from the start. Plan with them before you take the obvious pairs on the outside.

The Christmas Wreath layout stacks its 144 tiles in four layers: 58 on the table, 58 on layer 2, 26 on layer 3, 2 on top.

How we rate difficulty. We had the computer play 200 games on each layout, picking moves the same way our Hint button does. On Christmas Wreath it cleared the board without a shuffle in about 70% of games. That is easier than the classic Turtle, which comes in at about 50%.
