Mahjong Solitaire Christmas Mahjong
Christmas Mahjong
Six festive layouts for Mahjong Solitaire: a Christmas tree, a snowman, a bell, a stocking, a wreath and a present. Same 144 tiles, same rules, new shapes.
The game above is the Christmas Tree. Pick any of the others below to play it instead, and your music keeps playing while you switch. 5 of the six are easy layouts, so this is a good set to play with the family, or to wind down with after a long day of wrapping.

How to play
Click two free tiles with the same face to remove them. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and its left or right side is open. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. Clear all 72 pairs to win. If you are new to the game, the how to play guide explains it with pictures.
The Christmas Tree layout
The tree is ten rows tall. The star on top is a small cluster of tiles stacked three and four high. Below it the tree widens in tiers, from five tiles across to eleven, with a ridge three high running down the middle. A trunk of three tiles, stacked three high, and a pot of five finish it off at the bottom.
Tips for the tree
- Take the star first. Its stacks are the highest on the board, and the tiles underneath stay buried until the top ones go.
- Clear each tier from its edges. The widest rows near the bottom are eleven tiles long, so their middles stay blocked until you work in from both ends.
- Save the trunk and pot. They sit apart from the branches and come free early. Keep them as spare moves for when the branches run dry.

The Christmas Tree layout stacks its 144 tiles in four layers: 56 on the table, 56 on layer 2, 29 on layer 3, 3 on top.
How we rate difficulty. We had the computer play 200 games on each layout, picking moves the same way our Hint button does. On Christmas Tree it cleared the board without a shuffle in about 60% of games. That is easier than the classic Turtle, which comes in at about 50%. People who plan ahead do better than that, but the order of the layouts stays much the same. The full list is on the all layouts page.
The Holly table
The Christmas pages open on Holly, an evergreen table with red-edged tiles and a light dusting of snow. If you prefer another design, pick it under Designs and the game will remember it. You can choose Holly on any other layout too.
Christmas on the daily board
From 1 to 26 December, Daily Mahjong picks its layout from these six, so there is a new Christmas board every day of Advent. Everyone gets the same deal, so you can compare times with friends and family.
After Christmas, try the classic Turtle, the animal layouts or all 24 year-round layouts.
Questions people ask
What is Christmas Mahjong?
Mahjong Solitaire played on Christmas-shaped layouts. The rules and the 144 tiles are the same as always: match free pairs until the board is clear. Only the shapes change.
How many Christmas layouts are there?
Six: Christmas Tree, Snowman, Bell, Stocking, Wreath and Present. The tree is the game at the top of this page.
Which Christmas layout is easiest?
Snowman. Its narrow neck and waist split it into three small snowballs, and our test player cleared it in about three games out of four. Bell is the trickiest, about as hard as the classic Turtle.
Is Christmas Mahjong free?
Yes. Every layout is free in your browser, on a computer, tablet or phone, with no download or account.
Can I play the Christmas layouts all year?
Yes. They stay on the site all year. From 1 to 26 December the Daily Mahjong board also comes from the Christmas set.
